Bucking the trend

Don't despair! Get a repair! Or something like that...

I was just enjoying my newly repaired television playing audio through my newly repaired speakers. That's right. Repaired. Not replaced. Not chuck it out and buy a new one. Wasn't really that much for the TV, and the speakers did cost as much as replacing them but at least I get a better quality than I would have (and the right one for the box), and according to the guy at the speaker hospital it would last 15 years. So take that, advocates of disposable electronics! Anyway, I'm happy with them.

Yes I may need to eat my hat if the TV fails again within 6 months but I'm feeling all superior at the moment and I'm making the most of it.

I applaud your efforts sir. Hurrah for less thoughtless consumption!

Hoorah for repair. So many electronic devices are not designed for repair or reuse. Which often makes it far cheaper to replace than to repair.

One example that springs to mind was the iPod battery... According to research by Coz, if the battery died then bye bye iPod.... but apparently the company believes that you'll be wanting an upgrade by then anyway. (Obviously we aren't normal)

Grrr. Let's hope the trend is in decline soon.

Nick would be happy for you! If people didn't fix things there would be no vintage electronics left and he would have nothing to hunt for on the internet.

My dad was an electronics technician and he ALWAYS fixed EVERYTHING in our household. I miss that. xx

According to the nice repair man, the high voltage transformer had gone in the tv. Which explains a lot about how it behaved. And yes I am sick of almost being forced to dispose rather than repair. Yay for the speaker hospital! And yay for the tv guy too :)

Yeah. I'm still pissed off about the fact that our second-to-last car in Australia had to be scrapped as junk, because it was going to cost more to get it to pass inspection and get it registered than it cost to buy a new (used) car. This despite the fact that it was actually running fine at the time.

Well, if you bring cars into the equation.

When we asked about a trade in for the 1993 Hyundai... they didn't want it. It still goes just fine and thankfully Helen and Nick are now using it. Apparently quite a few people recognised the car on the way to festival, but didn't know the people in it.

If it wasn't for the fact that a certain tiny person needed his own door and better climate control, I'd still be driving the old car.

Mind you, the new one is REALLY nice!

We had a nice telly that some pirates broke. Tried to get it fixed but it turns out that integrated circuitry is no match for rum!

Dude, I don't think it was rum. I think that was special "break the tele no matter what" fluid, made in space by aliens. Don't ask me how the pirates got it - might have something to do with their altitude that night...
