Pretty much same feeling here. It went down on the long weekend but took me a while to photograph and blog it. The signs saying the rest are going to be cut down took about a week to go up.
While that is indeed a cunning idea... they opted for the cut them down, grind into powder and plant next to the previous row very similar trees that will take 50 years to provide some kind of shade.

They should at least put the trunk somewhere nice so people can still sit on it.
